Special Note- When you are looking for a doula training think about the experience and qualifications of the trainer and the reputation of the doula organization.  DONA International is the premier doula organization in the world with over 6,000 certified doulas.  Most people wanting to hire a doula will look at the DONA website.  Many other organizations that provide doula certification do not have the reputation that DONA has.

April 26 - 29th, 2012

In a beautiful mountain and woodland setting in Asheville NC April 2012 training participants will enjoy an intensive, holistic doula training workshop at the Rathbun Center which is nestled in 10 wooded acres in a neighborhood near Mission Hospital.  This training is offered as one of the Asheville Doula Trainings which take place every fall and spring in WNC.

The Rathbun Center is a non-profit corporation that provides lodging and other supportive services in a "home like" environment, free of charge, for patients and/or their family or caregivers coming into WNC for medical treatment.  The Rathbun Center isa house of comfort, hope, support and love.  The Rathbun Center makes their meeting facilities available to local groups and fees go toward the Center's expenses.

Training participants - The training is open to anyone who wants to support women during labor.  Participants learn about the emotions,  psychological and physical processes associated with birth and how labor support can help to create a more joyous experience for the woman and peaceful birth for the baby.

The course includes:  the importance of appropriate, culturally sensitive support, through case study and practice of special techniques designed to provide comfort and promote a normal labor and birth.  The training includes:  optimal positioning for normal labor; unique labor support techniques, how to conduct doula meetings with clients; practice of comfort measures, positions and techniques to help progress labor and help the baby descend for a normal labor and birth.  The training also provides information and practice about helping women and  partners with complications that may arise during late pregnancy, labor, and early postpartum.

The workshop does not include training in clinical skills as that is out of the scope of practice for doulas. This workshop meets the primary requirement by DONA International for doula certification.

The training also includes a special 4 hour breastfeeding training, offered at no charge on Thursday evening before the Doula Training from 4:30pm to 9pm.
