I took early retirement in January 2007 after working in public health education for 30 years. I have taught childbirth and parenting education classes for 23 years and now teach my childbirth education class for Mission Hospital.
I am passionate about birth, have been supporting women in labor for 20 years and have been a DONA approved doula trainer for over 8 years. I was originally trained as a doula and doula trainer by Penny Simkin, author, doula, childbirth educator and DONA founder.
I coordinated the 2002 and 2004 Asheville Birth Conferences, coordinated Buncombe County Health Center's volunteer doula program for 15 years and coordinated maternal health education at the Buncombe County Health Center for 22 years. I retired from the Buncombe County Health Center in Asheville NC after 26 great years!
I am a founder and active member of DAMA (Doula Association of the Mountain Area) at www.wncdoulas.com. the current President elect and a DONA certified doula and doula trainer. I am also an ICEA certified childbirth educator and the NC DONA State Rep.
My husband and I have been married for 32 years and have two adult daughters. Above is a picture of my family taken at So. Padre Island, Texas while visiting my younger daughter when she worked as an RN with Holy Family Birth Center. She worked there in So. Texas for a year, as an Ameri-Corps volunteer, www.holyfamilybirthcenter.com. She is now employed as a labor and delivery nurse with Mission Hospital.
My goal is to help bring babies into the world in a safe and peaceful manner. And to help parents create a peaceful and loving family environment!
All the best, Cheryl
