Peaceful Beginning
Birth and Postpartum Services
The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek meaning “to serve women” and now, in our modern culture, it refers to a woman trained and experienced in
childbirth and/or postpartum to provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a woman and her labor partner before, during, and after
childbirth.  A doula’s continuous presence, encouragement and reassurance, along with knowledge of comfort measures can decrease pain, stress, and anxiety for
the laboring mother as well as the entire family.  A postpartum doula after the birth helps the family ease into life with a new baby.

As a birth doula I will not take away from the role of the labor partner - instead I help the labor partner participate at a level which he or she feels comfortable.  I
will not take away from the role of the labor nurse- instead the labor nurse and I work side by side to meet the varying needs of a woman in labor.  I strive to be a
helpful member of the "birthing" team during the process of labor and birth and assist the parents to have the most joyous birth possible.

In addition to my doula practice I teach childbirth education classes as a member of the prenatal education team of Mission Hospital.  The classes are designed to
empower women and their partners to have the healthiest baby and best birth possible.  The information is holistic and evidence based and will provide "new
parents" with the proper knowledge to make good decisions during the birth of their new baby and after as they step into parenthood.

After birth I provide support for new parents as a postpartum doula.  I am available for the "4th trimester" or the first 3 months after birth.  Some of the services I
provide as a postpartum doula include: development of breastfeeding and changing stations in your home, assistance with baby equipment such as the use of slings,
baby wraps and breast pumps and help with newborn baby care.  I also provide a lending library of books, DVDs and videos about infant care and infant behavior,
provide breastfeeding support and light housework such as laundry, vacuuming and cleaning the kitchen.  I will also prepare nourishing meals in order to make life
a bit easier, all the while being either a "sounding board" if that is what you need or just a gentle ear to help you process your birth and assist in the learning process
of your huge new responsibility--a new baby.

I am
passionate about birth and babies, have been supporting women in labor for 20 years and have been a DONA approved doula trainer for over 8 years.  I was
originally trained as a doula and doula trainer by
Penny Simkin, author, doula, childbirth educator and DONA founder.  I received further DONA training in May
2006 as a postpartum doula so I currently provide birth and postpartum doula services. Please see my doula services and postpartum doula services pages.  I also
offer birth doula trainings in Western North Carolina and will travel out of the area to conduct trainings as well.

To give me a call or an email to check my availability see my birth doula services page!

My goal is a peaceful beginning for all babies and parents!   Cheryl
